Do you want to make your soccer jersey extra cool by adding a patch?
Maybe you have a favorite team logo or a fun design that you want to sew onto your jersey. Guess what? It is easier than you think.
I am going to show you step-by-step how to sew a patch onto your soccer jersey. You don’t need to be an expert in sewing with a little patience and the right tools. You will be able to make your jersey look even more awesome.
Let’s get started!
What You Need to Get Started
You need to gather a few things. These are all simple tools you can find around the house.
- A patch that you want to add to your jersey.
- A soccer jersey (of course!).
- A needle.
- Thread that matches the patch or your color.
- Scissors to cut the thread.
- Pins or double-sided tape to hold the patch in place while you sew.
Step 1
Pick the Perfect Spot for Your Patch
The first thing you need to do is decide where you want to place the patch. Most patches go on the front or sleeve of a soccer jersey, but you can put it anywhere you like. Hold the patch against the fabric of your jersey and imagine how it will look.
When you are happy with the position then use pins or double-sided tape to secure the patch to the jersey. This will keep it from moving around while you sew. Make sure the patch is straight if it has a logo or design that needs to be aligned properly. You can ask an adult or a friend to help check that it is lined up the way you want it.
Step 2
Get Your Needle and Thread Ready
Now that your patch is in place it is the time to prepare your needle and thread. Cut a piece of thread that is about as long as your arm. This should be enough to sew the patch without it getting tangled.
Next thread the needle by pushing the thread through the tiny hole at the top. If the thread is too thick for the needle then you can use thinner thread or a bigger needle. Once the thread is through now pull both ends of the thread together and tie a small knot at the end. This knot will stop the thread from pulling all the way through the fabric when you start sewing.
Step 3
Start Sewing the Patch
It may looks tricky at first but don’t worry i am here to guide you through it.
Flip the jersey inside out. This way, when you make a knot at the end of your thread, it won’t show on the outside of the jersey. Push the needle through the inside of the jersey and out through the edge of the patch. Make sure you are starting near one of the corners of the patch.
The most basic way to sew is by using a running stitch. Push the needle through the fabric for this and then back through the fabric a little bit further along. Keep going around the edge of the patch to make small stitches. Try to keep the stitches close together so the patch stays secure.
Take your time! There is no need to rush. If you are careful then your stitches will look neat and the patch will stay in place. If you make a mistake then its okay. You can always pull out the stitches and try again.
Step 4
Tie Off the Thread
Once you have sewn all the way around the patch now it is time to tie off the thread. Push the needle to the inside of the jersey and make a small knot by looping the thread through and pulling tight. Repeat this a couple of times to make sure the knot is secure. This will keep the thread from unravelling.
Use your scissors to cut off any extra thread after tying the knot. Don’t cut too close to the knot, or it might come undone. Leave just a little bit of thread to keep the knot in place.
Step 5
Check Your Work
Now it is time to check your work. Turn the jersey right-side out and look at the patch. Give it a little tug to make sure it is securely sewn on. If any part of the patch is coming loose then you can go back and sew over it again. If everything looks good, you’re done!
